ARMADA Marine Robotics is pleased to announce the signing of a license agreement with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) covering the use of Asymmetric Propulsion technology. Two of ARMADA’s founders, Dr. Jeff Kaeli and Robin Littlefield, are part of the WHOI team that developed the technology for use with unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). Asymmetric Propulsion provides increased capabilities to UUVs that use a single thruster for propulsion. This new technology enables both maneuvering and propulsion using a single electric motor and eliminates the need for fins and additional motors, thereby reducing weight, drag, complexity, and cost. This is a major advancement in the ability of a single UUV to conduct both rapid large area surveys and low-speed inspections at close range with a high degree of maneuverability not available in existing platforms. Rusty Warren, CEO of ARMADA, said “This license agreement opens the door for ARMADA to take Asymmetric Propulsion to the next level. Our next major goal is to make a commercial prototype that will be tested by potential customers. These tests will give us the real-world feedback we need to proceed with our business plan to design a system that revolutionizes how the world propels underwater vehicles.”
